Are you ready for your online course? Hopefully this is something you’ll be able to answer by the time you finish this short orientation.

To get you started, below are some important steps in Canvas you can follow to help you prepare for your class.

Step 1: Connect to Canvas

Most online courses operate through Canvas, the online learning management system for the University of Oklahoma. In order to access your “online classroom” in Canvas you’ll need to have the correct Browser, Operating System, and Components installed.

Take some time to check that you have the right type of computer to connect to Canvas, the correct Browser and plugins, as well as access to high-speed internet.

>> Canvas Computer Requirements
Follow this link to check if your computer and internet will work with Canvas.

>> Canvas Browser Support
Follow this link to check if your browser will work and if you have the right plugins installed..

If you need assistance, call the IT Call Center (405) 325-HELP (4357), or go to the OU Online Support Center and fill out a Request for Help.

Step 2: Customize your Canvas Account

To stay in communication with your instructor and be notified of course events be sure to do the following:

SET UP YOUR DEFAULT EMAIL IN CANVAS

If you have created an OU email alias it is important to add this to Canvas so you can reply to emails sent from Canvas.

EXAMPLE: If your default OU email address is Ima.B.Sooner-1@ou.edu, you might have set up a shorter, easier email alias such as imasooner@ou.edu. This needs to be added to Canvas.

Set your notification preferences in Canvas

Make sure to check your notification preferences in Canvas. Notifications provide you with helpful alerts about course activity, such as:

  • grades
  • new discussion posts
  • upcoming quizzes
  • assignments
  • announcements
  • “conversations” or messages

You are responsible for all information your instructors send through Canvas so it is important to get your email and notifications set correctly.

OU EMAIL ALIAS & NOTIFICATIONS
Be sure to enable notifications for your OU email alias if you have one.  You may want to disable any notifications for your default OU email address to avoid receiving duplicate notifications.

DOWNLOAD THE CANVAS MOBILE APP

It is also recommended that you download and install the Canvas Mobile app for on-the-go access to course materials, schedule, and communications.

ADD A PROFILE PHOTO

Set up your profile in Canvas to include a photo. This helps you and your classmates to better connect with one another and the instructor.

>>> When accessing your course, it is important to click on the course card so that you will see all of the course content.

CHECK MODULES
Once you locate your course most of the course content will be located in the Modules area.
